I forgot how much I love Eternal Sunshine. It has a very uplifting message. Once you get past all the petty bullshit, real love is happy. At its core, love is worth it; no matter the tough times, deep at the heart of it, love is always worth it.
The other thing I love about that movie is its overall hopeful tone. It shows that if something is meant to be, it will be. Nothing we can do will stop it. Clementine & Joel; Mary & Howard. They've done everything they can to eliminate each other to avoid pain, but Joel realizes the sacrifice is far greater than it's worth. Mary goes a step further. She realizes the same thing Joel learns and decides people need their memories. They create us; both good and bad, they have a place and a purpose in our lives.
At the end, Joel wants to try again and Clementine starts listing all the possible negative outcomes from their last attempt. Joel just looks at her and says, "Okay..." It's such an uplifting statement. Why spend our time worrying about the problems we may face down the road; why write something off because it might not work in the end. The important thing is to live each moment and enjoy things while they last.
Life is what we make it. Find the good.
Till next time...
